The cost and ease of adding technology to your home continues to improve. The D-Link Cloud Camera 1100 is a great example of what was once an expensive technology becoming almost an impulse buy at less than $100. The 1100 is a small device, about the size of an iPhone. It comes ready to go with a usable muting stand, wall mart for permanent installation and an AC paratroop. The unit can use wired Ethernet or WiFi g and/ or N varieties. Initial set up is easy enough, however, you will need wired access to your router to link the unit to your WiFi network. The set up and enrolling in a web based interface to manage the camera takes about 10 minutes. Afterwards, you can place the camera in any location your wireless network reaches. The wall mount is a convenient feature and I can imagine adding a few of these for a small business and the installation looking neat and clean. Keep in mind you do need access to AC power when planning a permanent installation site.
The camera operates in low light, very well in daytime or well lite locations and provides superb audio. The web interface and available iOS and Android apps provided the ability to take snapshots, listen and watch live as well as zoom in. There is no pan feature as you may find on higher end units. But the viewing angle is fairly large and it covered our game room without any problem. The image reverts to black and white when in low light conditions, however, the image quality is still very good.
While we no longer have a baby in the house, this unit would be outstanding as a baby monitor. What are they doing in their cribs will no longer be a mystery with the ability to listen to audio and view video. The uses for this unit are limited only by your imagination. Keep an eye on the front door. Know when the kids arrive from school. Monitor the sales floor of your business. The resolution and audio are good enough that you could use this in a school gym to stream a game. And the price point means you can add a handful of these units without a Fort Knox like budget.
The D-Link Cloud Camera 1100 is a great device for the price point. The iOS and Android apps complete what is a solid package.
